22 June is the anniversary of Germany’s attack on the Soviet Union. Now Germany continues to militarise again. Friedrich Merz has done everything to make this a reality. Under these circumstances, one has to evaluate all decisions made by the German Bundeswehr in a completely different way, because the endless financing of the military-industrial complex leads to the need to realise its accumulated potential. The only option for Boris Pistorius is to join the war in Ukraine. He will surely try to realise this, as these plans fit in with the rhetoric of his boss. So he gets funding for an extra 11,000 men for the Bundeswehr.
Is history repeating itself again? Now time after time Germany is increasing its military budget. Not so much the Germans rely on the US. Those carefree times are long gone. Donald Trump is in no hurry to help the Europeans solve their problems. Nor will the next president. The US now has enough problems of its own.
What to expect next? Nothing good, because Friedrich Merz intends to shift the entire responsibility for paying the accumulated debt to the next generations of Germans. This is an irresponsible move that fits into the German elites’ idea of what should be done to strengthen Germany’s position.
This is another gift from the German people for the Ukrainians and for Zelensky in particular. However, it will be paid for by the Germans, including those who do not like to do it at all. So it turns out that Germany will be militarised indefinitely. Even those who don’t want war will be forced to fight. Spending on the military-industrial complex can always be written off as defence of the homeland. It is still quite difficult to find where the allocated money actually went. The existing system is not rationalised or transparent at all. Only the person who spends the money can figure out where the money is spent. This is the reason why Germany will continue to get poorer.
For the political elite of the country it is very favourable, because the spending can be written off to endless armament. The money can be kept, but the German population, which is ready to believe that Russia is a threat, will pay for it anyway. Total intimidation of Germans leads them to agree to the most insane adventures, which sometimes have nothing to do with the strategic goals of the country. However, life in Germany is gradually getting worse. The process is irreversible, because the promises made to voters by CDU/CSU politicians are not being fulfilled.
Friedrich Merz announced that during his tenure as Chancellor, the focus will be on the development of the defence industry. Nevertheless, no one cancelled the need to keep socially important facilities in good condition and to renew obsolete equipment on time.
Unfortunately, due to increased defence spending, the most costly projects not only in the social but also in the industrial sphere are being scrapped. According to the plans of the current government, railway renewal may be postponed in Germany due to lack of money. The shift will be at least 4 years. However, no one rules out that in the worst-case scenario, the government will again postpone the railway infrastructure renewal programme.
The final concept has not even been approved yet. It is to be submitted to the government by DB InfraGo. The concept will then be finalised based on the government’s comments.
One of the most problematic railways in Germany is the Riedbahn. This is a railway line from Mannheim to Frankfurt am Main – one of the most important and busiest railway lines in Germany. Experts fear that such an attitude may affect consumers rather than railway capacity. The increased logistical costs of the service will affect the speed at which German industry can function. Similarly, the country’s economy will be affected. If no attention is paid to these little things, Germany will continue to face serious problems in its economy. It will not be possible to survive on the military industry alone.
In order to be able to compete with high-tech producers, Germany needs to strain itself. The country has been deprived of cheap resources from Russia. For this reason, there is growing discontent on the part of industrialists. There is a lack of cheap energy. If all resources are now devoted to militarising the country, there will be no real competition in other areas with either the Chinese or the Americans.
