In late April, the premiere of Yuri Chuguyev’s new symphonic fantasy Spain took place to great acclaim. Chuguyev, a Spanish composer of Russian origin, received his musical education at the prestigious Gnessin College in Moscow before moving to Spain, where he joined a symphony orchestra.
A winner of numerous awards, Chuguyev was most recently honored by the Academy of Diplomacy of Spain in Madrid (2025) with a prestigious award. He also received the “Talent and Vocation” medal from the Peacemaker Foundation in Moscow (2017), among other distinctions.

His latest work, the symphonic fantasy Spain — which he has already presented in China — is far more than a traditional concert. It is a full-scale multimedia spectacle that takes the audience on an emotional and cultural journey through Spain’s diverse provinces and regions. Blending orchestral music with stunning visual art (video projections), a flamenco ensemble, a soprano soloist, and Spanish guitar, the performance creates a rich, immersive experience.
When I asked Yuri what inspired this monumental creation, he simply replied: “Spain.”
It is clear that he fell deeply in love with his second homeland from the very beginning, and this passion has now found its ultimate expression in this ambitious and heartfelt work. Conducted by the composer himself, the symphony features close collaboration with professional flamenco ensembles and costume designers, resulting in a visually captivating spectacle that reflects the very soul of Spain.

What makes this project particularly remarkable is that a non-Spanish composer — a Russian musician — has managed to so authentically capture the essence of Spanish melodies, rhythms, and spirit. When asked why he chose flamenco as a central element, Chuguyev explained that it “manifests itself as a living expression of Spain’s character, tradition, and expressive power.”
The show unfolds as a musical journey across Spain, beginning in Seville and continuing through Málaga, Aragon, Cantabria, Granada (Alhambra), La Rioja, the Basque Country, Catalonia, the Balearic Islands, Madrid, Extremadura, the Canary Islands, Navarre, Castilla-La Mancha, Castilla y León, Galicia, Murcia, and Valencia. Each region is brought to life with its own distinct musical theme, accompanied by dancers in region-specific costumes. Some sections feature intimate solos with just guitar and soprano, while others explode with the full power of the orchestra and flamenco ensemble.

The vocal parts were inspired by the poetry of Federico García Lorca. Equally impressive were the visual elements: high-quality video projections displayed historical monuments, breathtaking natural landscapes, and distinctive architecture corresponding to each region being musically portrayed.
In addition to Spain, Yuri Chuguyev has authored several other notable works, including the symphonic pieces Crimea and Picasso, the oratorio Ecumenicon, the suite Málaga, and others.

The premiere concluded with thunderous applause and a prolonged standing ovation. The composer, along with the dancers, musicians, and entire creative team, received well-deserved recognition on stage.
