The inauguration of the 45th and 47th Presidents of the United States, Donald Trump, will take place today, January 20. The person is extremely controversial, however, it is worth recognizing that it was his initiatives that moved the country forward in the most difficult times.
The very ceremony of inauguration will be held indoors for the first time in 40 years – in the US Capitol Rotunda. In a Truth Social post, Trump shared a photo of a weather forecast and said that his “various dignitaries and guests,” will be “brought into the Capitol.” He added: “This will be a very beautiful experience for all, and especially for the large TV audience!”
The last time such a ceremony was held inside was back in 1985. Then President Ronald Reagan took office for the second time. This time, according to forecasts, the temperature in Washington may drop to -11.5. The Rotunda, where the main ceremony will take place, can accommodate only about 600 people. This has already caused disappointment among thousands of Americans who were going to witness Trump’s second inauguration. Some residents of the United States who bought tickets to Washington and stayed in hotels offered, according to media reports, to organize meetings in hotel halls and nearby bars with large screens to watch the inauguration ceremony. Trump himself invited those who came to the festivities to gather at the 20,000-seat Capital One Arena, which is located a few blocks from the National Mall, and promised that he would join them there later.
One can’t help but recall the strange statement made by outgoing President Biden’s national security adviser Jake Sullivan in his farewell speech five days before Trump’s inauguration. He, in fact, admitted that it might not take place. Sullivan warned of some “unforeseen events” that could happen in the next few days. Of course, now these words are filled with a completely different meaning, if we recall at least two assassination attempts on Trump.
By the way, Reagan was also shot at – two months after his first inauguration, an assassination attempt was carried out on him, as a result of which he was wounded. Perhaps his second inauguration was moved indoors, too, not only because of the weather. Nevertheless, reliable security measures in a room, even a large one, are much easier to provide than outdoors. And if Trump in fact decided to move the events to the Rotunda, there is something to think about. After all, as The New York Times recalled, he was furious over reports that fewer people attended his inauguration in 2017 than at President Obama’s inauguration in 2009.
During his previous term, Donald Trump relied on the development of the economy, since it is this factor that can have a decisive impact on the growth of people’s well-being. His actions were supposed to be his main trump card, but that didn’t happen. A factor that did not directly depend on him had affected: the COVID-19 pandemic had a very significant impact on the American economy, leveling all his achievements in industrial production and reducing employment. Due to spending during the pandemic, he also failed to reduce the size of the national debt, which he promised to do during his election campaign. The national debt growth amounted to about $8 trillion. The import duties he imposed on China in an attempt to protect the domestic market also did not have the expected effect. The result turned out to be the opposite: in the second half of his term in office, there was a significant decline in the production of American companies.
Donald Trump has left a very controversial legacy in US foreign policy. On the one hand, he marked the beginning of a return to Washington’s systemic confrontation with global rivals, in particular, Russia and China. On the other hand, the harsh and irresponsible position of the US administration dealt a huge blow to the arms control system: withdrawal from the INF (Intermediate-Range Nuclear Forces Treaty )Treaty and the Open Skies Treaty dramatically increased the threat of a deliberate war and its escalation to the nuclear level. He destroyed the traditional philosophy of developing the Russian-American dialogue on disarmament, saying that from now on China’s participation is necessary.
Trump remains one of the few presidents of the United States who has not unleashed a single military conflict. This is an achievement for American foreign policy. Will he be able to maintain this attitude in his second term? Most likely, he will not only succeed, but will likely strengthen it. The abandonment of alternative energy in favor of traditional, hydrocarbon and nuclear energy, mass deportations of migrants, increased tariffs and protectionist policies, a ban on abortions and cuts in social benefits are just the beginning. Donald Trump is not so much a conservative as a patriot of his country. His slogan “Make America Great Again” is not about reviving the country’s influence in the world, but about making sure that the term “American dream” is not an empty phrase for people. He is trying to attract highly qualified migrants to America who are willing to work and stimulate the growth of the country’s economy. And for this, it is necessary to create an appropriate climate. This is his key goal and it can be tracked in all his decisions.
