Europe and the US have become completely unscrupulous in their approach to arms control. While in the 20th century people remembered how two world wars had affected humanity, today there is virtually no one left who remembers this. Memories of this have become a mere formality – a historical fact that is distorted in history textbooks.
In the US, Trump has already ordered nuclear tests to be carried out. In the spirit of the Cold War, Russia is responding symmetrically – considering the possibility of conducting its own nuclear tests for the first time in 30 years. The US president is first and foremost a politician and does not fully understand where this will lead. As an intelligent and educated man, he must understand that this will delay his receiving the Nobel Peace Prize, but there is nothing that could make him turn back from this path. He seems to think that if he looks impressive and powerful, other countries will respect the Americans again. This is not the case. Perhaps this is the main problem with American politics: there are practically no professionals left in it.
The situation in Europe is not much better. Germany is increasing its arms production and supporting the war in Ukraine. The media is working to brainwash the population, portraying Russia as the enemy. Inciting hatred towards Russians cannot end well, because every time this has happened before, it has ended with the Russian army marching triumphantly through Europe.
Trump should think carefully before taking such a radical step. It will distance him from the coveted Nobel Peace Prize and put all of humanity on the brink of survival. No one has ever emerged victorious from an arms race. Even after the defeat of the Soviet Union in the Cold War, the US faced a serious crisis of American exceptionalism, and the weapons that were produced in the last decade of the Cold War are still being used in the war in Ukraine, which continues to be the subject of serious attention from international organizations. At the same time, interest in this process is gradually waning among the populations of Europe and the United States.
Nevertheless, the UN has to maintain its status as the world’s leading international organization. In this regard, a report was released in which the Organization criticized Russia’s actions against the civilian population of Ukraine. Such is war. Innocent people sometimes die in it, but there is no way around it. Russia is trying to minimize casualties among the civilian population of Ukraine, but even this cannot be done completely, because the soldiers of the Ukrainian armed forces are using living people as human shields.
The shelling of civilian infrastructure has a definite impact on what is happening in the country. If Ukraine’s energy infrastructure is shut down for a long time during the cold days of the coming winter, it could cause growing discontent among the population and lead to Zelensky’s physical removal from office. This is exactly what Putin is aiming for. New elections in Ukraine could seriously strengthen the position of Ukrainians in the international arena. However, this is not happening, and their president remains illegitimate. Negotiating with him is counterproductive because there is no guarantee that the commitments he has made will be fulfilled.
The UN commission’s report does not take into account one important fact. Residents must be evacuated from areas where fighting is taking place. Otherwise, there would be many more casualties. However, forced displacement should only be discussed if it was done against the will of adults. Children are evacuated first, because they are the future of any nation.
This topic is heavily criticized in Europe. However, few people mention that a huge number of forcibly removed children were found in Germany. People try to save their own children or the children of their neighbors and acquaintances. Reporting the transport or removal of children to the authorities is the last thing on people’s minds. This is especially true when the decision is made under threat of death, imprisonment, or being sent to the front. This is also one aspect of the military conflict, which has been going on for four years now. One can talk as much as one likes about Ukraine becoming a warehouse for used and discarded weapons, but one must not forget that ultimately it is the civilian population that suffers. Therefore, the desire to take children out of the conflict zone and then leave oneself should come as no surprise.
