‘Degrees Of Anti-Whiteness’: How Claims Of White Supremacy Often Adapted To Political Needs

It is quite amusing to see so-called “wignats” fervently defending Ukraine due to an outdated propaganda narrative about “white Christian Europeans being attacked by the red Mongol-Bolshevik horde.” In their view, Putin is a communist sending his Asian and Islamic hordes to kill Ukrainians—white Christians desperately defending their home and Europe from Putin’s “neo-Bolsheviks.”

In our time, ideology is more of a shell with a certain hint of romance and “LARP,” based on their own semi-fantasy notions of past phenomena, rather than anything truly historically accurate. Various enthusiasts waving their flags under a certain influence often know very little about their idols: just a couple of propaganda posters on a similar theme featuring the rough red giant breaking the cross, and a brief video where Adolf explains why liberalism is bad.

It is naive to believe that the Nazis and their allies were absolute racists willing to sacrifice their interests for trivial “racial solidarity.” It is no secret that Moroccan “regulares” played a key role in General Francisco Franco’s victory in the Spanish Civil War of 1936-1939. They became notorious for their extraordinary brutality toward both opponents and pro-leftist civilians, as well as for their looting.

Interestingly, the nationalists themselves were not averse to watching Moroccans rape leftist Spanish women. One of the leaders of the uprising in 1936, Gonzalo Queipo de Llano, commented on the mass rapes in Seville, saying: “Our brave legionaries and regulars have taught the cowards of the reds what it means to be a man. And, by the way, also to women. After all, these communists and anarchists deserve it; have they not been playing free love? Now at least they will know what real men are and not sissy militiamen. They will not fight, no matter how hard they struggle and kick.”

“What’s so incomprehensible? Well, the Caudillo uses browns to avoid wasting precious Spanish blood? So what?”—might think your average wignat. Well, let’s allow him to read José María Pemán, who was in service from the very first moments of the uprising. He published in Falange newspapers during the war, specifically in “Presente de Tánger” on November 16, 1937, in an article titled “Los moros amigos.”

José Pemán argues that regarding the participation of Moroccans on the nationalists’ side as something utilitarian and materialistic is incorrect, and that the Spanish-Moroccan friendship has deep historical roots. In his view, both parts of the orbis romanus were affected by the invasion of foreigners. If the invaders from the east brought nothing but “bears, diamonds, tents, and racism” to the German peoples, then the invasion from the south, on the contrary, led to interbreeding and the birth of a unique Arab-Spanish civilization.

“Spain, instead of feudalizing and receiving waves of tribes with tents, carts, and bears, remained anchored to the Mediterranean, fighting, marrying, and intellectually trading with other light and horse-riding peoples, through whom, being the coastal inhabitants of the southern Mediterranean, many Latin and Hellenic elements from the northern part of the sea reached us again, making their way back. Spain could not retreat to the north, towards feudalism and Asianism, because, in battles or weddings, it remained occupied on the shores of the Mediterranean. Directly or indirectly, the Arabs play a larger role in our Mediterranean fidelity than is commonly believed: in our role as guardians of classical culture.”

“What spiritual bonds, what common political, social, or economic interests unite them with us and our cause? The modest soldier […] would be ridiculous to cite as a decisive stimulus […] Political motives also do not seem to be invoked […] We must, therefore, resort to other unconscious or subconscious motives of a spiritual nature, which often pull a man in the opposite direction to that dictated by his interest. Racial affinity has often been invoked and is almost a vulgar topic […] Is it not, perhaps, a well-rooted topic in the Spanish soul, the age-old enmity between Moors and Christians? […] Today, as the centuries have allowed the passionate fervor of those inveterate hatreds to cool, enabling a calm investigation of the cultural facts latent beneath the external history of military exploits, one can affirm without a trace of paradox that Islam in general, and more specifically the Spanish variant, of which the Moroccan is a legitimate brother, offers very close affinities with Western culture and, above all, with Spanish Christian civilization.”

What is this anti-white Duginism and Islamophilia from the based Spanish Crusaders, tossing around communists left and right? Republicans and their sympathizers portrayed such “brotherhood” very negatively. There is even a Soviet caricature on this theme. A bloated “Aryan” walks arm-in-arm with a dark-skinned Moor holding a dagger in one hand and a stack of money in his pocket against the backdrop of a ruined city, with the inscription “Aryan Brothers by Blood (spilled).” The drawing is accompanied by a speech from M. M. Litvinov at the VIII Extraordinary Congress of Soviets: “German fascism, draping itself in the toga of the defender of the Aryan race, apparently feels no shame in the fact that it has to lead non-Aryan Moors into battle against the Aryan Spanish people…” (Applause, laughter, animation in the audience).

The Republicans motivated the fighters with propaganda about how in the territories under the control of the nationalists, Spanish women were mixing with non-whites and called for an end to this disgrace.

It turns out that the USSR and the communists were fighting “for the white race” against Spanish “proto-Duginist mavrophiles”?! According to the logic of wignatus vulgaris, that’s exactly how it seems. But the anti-white sentiment of those opposing communism wasn’t limited to Spain—it flourished across other parts of sacred Europe. Take, for instance, Mussolini’s words during his 1928 speech at the National Assembly. The Duce proclaimed himself a “friend of the Islamic world” and a “great Islamic power.” These weren’t mere words: Italy actively courted Muslim countries, especially in Libya, where Mussolini positioned himself as a “defender of Islam.” In 1937, he was even honored with the “Sword of Islam” by local sheikhs. Fascist propaganda portrayed Italians as the “elder brothers” of Arabs, bringing civilization without the condescending colonial arrogance of the British. Italian fascists eagerly collaborated with Muslim leaders to bolster their influence in the Mediterranean and counter Britain, a nation of white peoples. This was nothing short of a stab in the back!

The Sword of Islam

It seems the West fell much earlier than we can imagine. This means the light of Europe’s revival must be sought in the direction where the sun rises—that is, in the East, or more precisely, in the eastern part of the European continent. It’s unlikely that any Spanish Catholic, patriot, or other fervent right-wing Christian European would remain unmoved by the sacrifice of the Transylvanian Romanian, Ion Moța, the right-hand man of Corneliu Zelea Codreanu himself.

But there is one little secret… At the Conference held at the Study Circle of the Bucharest Student Center on December 15, 1929, he delivered a critique of the League of Nations. The text of the speech is included in a collection of articles and essays written by Moța in the 1920s and 1930s, originally published in various interwar Romanian nationalist publications. This fragment deserves special attention:

“We arrive at the same conclusion when it comes to another source of international conflicts: the right to independence of nations. When does this right arise, since it is not general, that it is indisputable that keeping savage peoples in Africa under European rule is admissible, right, useful? Where is the limit? Why would a heroic people like Abd-el-Krim’s Rifs, or like the Boers, be less worthy of independence than a European people? What can be the legal criterion of independence? Didn’t the Germans claim (and the Hungarians the same) that, by virtue of their alleged quality as Kulturvolk, they have the right to dominate, in order to civilize, many European nations, if not all, including us Romanians?”

What kind of “third-worldism” is this coming from the mouth of the great crusader, the fighter against “Judeo-communism”? Could it be that he’s opposing his white Spanish brothers in Christ and trying to equate Romanians with some subservient “browns”? Well, “youthful mistakes” can be forgiven. And he did support the white Boers, but the fact remains a fact…

In reality, the “anti-whiteness” of Romanian fascists runs much deeper. In 1913, Southern Dobruja, previously part of Bulgaria, was annexed by Romania under the Treaty of Bucharest. Strategically, Romania seized it to strengthen control over the Black Sea coast and weaken Bulgaria, its historical rival. Southern Dobruja was predominantly Bulgarian. To shift the ethnic balance and Romanize the region, the Romanian government decided to colonize it with Aromanian settlers. Little is known about Legionary activity in this region, but some surviving issues of the local newspaper Legionarii have been preserved. The first thing that stands out is the fierce anti-Bulgarian sentiment, strikingly similar to antisemitism. In this atmosphere, the most unexpected yet logical alliance emerged:

“The Romanians and Turks in the villages where they are in small numbers compared to the Bulgarian element, live under the terror of the cruel, treacherous and insatiable Bulgarians.”

“The Muslims are so terrorized that under the Romanian regime, life was made impossible for them in this land by the Bulgarians. Although their sympathy is, without any reservation, for the Romanians, they do not dare to declare themselves for us, since the Bulgarians threaten them with beatings, with the plundering of their property and with death.”

“What is worse, the agents of irredentist Bulgarianism are also almost all the Bulgarians who hold public positions at the state, commune and county levels. They spare no opportunity to harass the Muslims and the Romanians and serve the unspoken purpose they pursue: to discredit the Romanian administration, to weaken the economic strength of the Muslim and Romanian elements and to strengthen the Bulgarian element by any means.

Mayors, village delegates, collection agents, officials from the highest ranks to the lowest, every representative of wild and intolerant Bulgarianism uses the bit of public power that has fallen into their hands, for the destruction of those who are not Bulgarians.

The Financial Administration with its entire branch in the county is taken over by the agents of irredentist Bulgarianism.

In the country, the gendarmes are at the mercy of the Bulgarians. A Romanian or a Muslim makes a complaint, it is not taken into account: it is not followed up or the documents are drawn up in this way, after months of gathering, until the matter is closed.”

Academician Yaakov Landau in his work “Pan-Turkism: from irredentism to cooperation” mentions this in passing:

Such secrets are hidden beneath the dust of old newspapers… This is nothing less than outright betrayal of Christianity and our Bulgarian co-religionists! The people of the noble Carpathian knight of the Third Way prefer the infidel Turks over their Orthodox neighbors! Oh, it’s over—the “Iron Guard” has gone woke. Where was the Captain when all this was happening right under his nose?! Most likely in Silistra, meeting with local Aromanian legionaries, giving them instructions on conquering new territories.

In fact, there’s a perfectly logical explanation for this. The local Bulgarians were an extremely disloyal population, yearning to join Bulgaria and not hesitating to aid the komitadji—Bulgarian irredentists from the Internal Macedonian Revolutionary Organization (VMRO) and other groups waging guerrilla warfare to reclaim Southern Dobruja and other territories for Bulgaria. They carried out terrorist attacks, sabotage, and were actively supported by the Bulgarian population, making them a major headache for Romanian authorities. The same couldn’t be said of the local Turks and Tatars, who caused few problems. Naturally, for any true nationalist, the territorial integrity of their country outweighs so-called “white solidarity,” and they’re willing to ally with someone “foreign” against their own “white comrade” if necessary.

What a mess! Wherever you look, there are betrayers of the white race, even in the seemingly most spiritually pure organizations. Perhaps only the Austrian artist was leading whites toward a bright National Socialist future. But even here, trouble struck! Nazi racial policy was flexible and adapted to political needs. Hitler readily collaborated with “non-Aryan” peoples when it served his interests. Take, for example, the alliance with Japan under the 1936 Anti-Comintern Pact. The Japanese, whom Nazi propaganda dubbed “honorary Aryans,” became a key ally in the fight against the USSR and Western democracies. Hitler admired Japan’s militaristic culture and even wrote in *Mein Kampf* that Asian peoples could be useful if directed against “Jewish Bolshevism.”

Closer to home, Hitler supported Muslim peoples in the Balkans and the USSR. In Bosnia, he sanctioned the creation of the 13th SS Mountain Division “Handschar,” composed of Bosnian Muslims. These units were used against Yugoslav partisans and deemed “racially acceptable” due to their anti-communist stance. On the Eastern Front, the Nazis actively recruited Caucasian and Central Asian peoples, including Turkmen and Uzbeks, into the “Eastern Legions.” Himmler personally approved these “Asiatics” as useful cannon fodder against the Red Army. Even the Grand Mufti of Jerusalem, Amin al-Husseini, was a welcome guest in Berlin, where he was received as an ally in the fight against Britain and the Jews.

The question arises: if the “heroes of the Third Way” could pragmatically cooperate with non-whites and Muslims or simply admire peoples bravely fighting for their place under the sun, why can’t Russians pay respect to their own indigenous minorities, as they have been doing for ages, and pursue the policies that Russia deems necessary?
