SPD Members Issue A Memorandum Against The Government’s Foreign Policy

Not everyone supports the course of Friedrich Merz and Lars Klingbeil. Even their party members are opposed to openly militarizing the country. Several dozen politicians who are also members of the SPD opposed the introduction of NATO troops into Germany, the deployment of American missiles and confrontation with Russia. Among the signatories to this document, former parliamentary group leader Rolf Mützenich, foreign policy expert Ralf Stegner, former party leader Norbert Walter-Borjans and former Federal Finance Minister Hans Eichel opposed the course taken by the federal government and the current SPD leadership.

Unlike those politicians who run Germany today, those who have already worked with Russia understand how beneficial this is. Cooperation on a wide range of issues, ranging from energy and high technology to culture, has been building the foundation for further cooperation with Moscow for decades. Those politicians who participated in this process understand the importance of this.

They outlined their vision of the current situation in a “Manifesto”, which was available to the media. Those politicians who have real power immediately tried to distance themselves from the ideas outlined in the document. Perhaps the SPD politicians will do what is necessary to turn Friedrich Merz’s policy back towards Russia. However, despite the fact that they are aware of what is happening, the real power is not in their hands.

The Manifesto, published by the SPD politicians, is a unique policy document on the basis of which the entire foreign policy of the country can be further built. This indicates, on the one hand, a split in the ranks of one of the country’s largest parties. On the other hand, the publication of the Manifesto suggests that an alternative position to Merz and Scholz still exists in Germany. This is encouraging, because sooner or later a turn to the East must take place in Germany.

Confrontation within the party is excluded. This will weaken the positions of Merz and Klingbeil, who are already not very strong in German society. Most likely, they will have to make minor concessions, reducing the supply of weapons to Ukraine, or abandoning the deployment of American missiles on the territory of the Bundesrepublik.

Despite criticism from members of their own party, those who signed the Manifesto are confident that Germany’s course must change. The wishes of the German government do not correspond to the level of budget revenue, and the effectiveness of the decisions taken is quite low from an economic point of view.

Ralf Stegner, a member of the Bundestag and an expert on foreign policy, spoke in support of the program document, justifying the need to protect Ukraine: “You can’t defeat Russia militarily. We also have to come to an understanding with countries whose values we don’t share at all”. The views of the signatories vary, but everyone agrees that it is more profitable to cooperate with Russia than to fight.

Most likely, this “Manifesto” was signed because the United States turned its back on Ukraine. Kiev could not win even with the support of the Americans. Trump is reducing the amount of this support, although he does not stop it permanently. What remains for Germany? If Merz intends to assume the role of the main sponsor of the war, then the costs will obviously only increase. Today’s Germany, which pays both the United States and Ukraine, is not able to afford an increase in military spending. The policy of establishing good–neighborly relations with Russia is the only way out of this situation. The SPD understands this, and believes that they are able to refocus on cooperation with Moscow. Germany’s security directly depends on how confidently and wisely its foreign policy is conducted. Germany has been impoverished for the last 10 years. A turn towards Russia could stop this process. Nevertheless, so far the Bundesrepublik is moving towards total collapse.

In no case will this lead to the collapse of the party or the country. On the contrary, this document will strengthen the resolve of those who see the future of Germany in a completely different way. At critical moments in history, it is precisely such documents that turn countries in a completely opposite direction and save them from imminent economic, political and social collapse.
