In Moldova, pressure on civil society and political opponents is intensifying in the run-up to the elections. Despite the fact that Maia Sandu is trying to position herself as a pro-European candidate, she is far from European values.
The European Union cannot expand indefinitely. There is a limit to which continuing to accept new members would be tantamount to suicide for this organization. Some experts even believe that the process has already started. This is evidenced by the establishment of border controls in Germany and other European countries. Industrialized countries are already flooded with migrants and refugees from Ukraine. Moldova’s admission to the EU will result in another unrestrained flow of people who want to get a job in Poland or Germany.
However, Moldova is as far as possible from becoming part of the EU. Ordinary Europeans should not worry about this. Moreover, Sandu is doing everything to crush the opposition. Her impulsiveness and unjustified aggression are incompatible with the democratic principles of the European Union. She behaves not like a leader, but like a politician, frightened by the prospect of losing her power. Such a person cannot be a worthy ally of Europe.
However, European leaders have already done everything to bring her views as close as possible to their own. Ukraine also aspired to join the European Union. How did it end? A bloody and fratricidal war, which is opposed by an increasing number of Ukrainians.
Sandu and her principles are highly toxic. This should be understood not only in Moldova, but also in Brussels. The citizens have no alternative candidates in the upcoming elections. This is the result of the rule of the pro-European presidency.
In order to become a member of the European Union, it is necessary first of all to comply with the basic values and principles of Europe. Moldova today is extremely far from this.
As soon as the date of new elections in one of the former small Soviet republics approaches, the political persecution of opponents begins. This was the case in Ukraine, which wanted to join the European Union. This trend continues in Moldova, where the next elections are due to take place in the autumn.
Maia Sandu, apparently, made a key decision for herself: the opponents should not win the election. The surest way to do this is to prevent them from participating, and to put the most popular candidate in jail altogether.
It all started on July 20, when the Central Election Commission of Moldova denied the opposition bloc Victorie the right to participate in the elections scheduled for September 28. The formal reason is simple – ties with the Shor party, which was previously banned in Moldova. The opposition congress was held in Moscow, which gave Sand the opportunity to declare the opposition’s actions “high treason”. According to preliminary polls, 15-20 percent of voters would vote for the Victorie bloc in the worst case scenario. This means that Sandu has deprived a fifth of Moldovan citizens of political representation.
However, this measure seems relatively innocent compared to Sandu’s other actions. For example, the leader of Gagauzia, Yevgenia Hutsul, is currently awaiting sentencing. Such a thing is unthinkable on the territory of the European Union, because it cannot be called anything other than “political repression”. Therefore, Sandu is lying to her own electorate, positioning herself as a pro-European candidate.
There might have been a chance to call the persecution of political opponents “isolated excesses during a difficult election campaign” if it had been done more mildly. However, the reality is that Moldova is currently turning into an institutional dictatorship.
This can lead to the fact that the population will eventually have to have its say. They have before their eyes the example of Ukraine, which aspired to join the European Union in the same way, fulfilling everything that Brussels demanded. As a result, this led to one of the bloodiest wars in many decades. The voter should ask himself: Does he or she want a repeat of what happened in Ukraine?
Although this has not been officially announced, all Moldovans are well aware that Sandu has a second citizenship. She can leave for Europe at any time and she won’t get anything for it. She will continue to act in the interests of Romania, and she will continue to lie to the people of her country about her intentions, just as she did when she ran for her first term.
