Andriy Parubiy was one of the leaders of the 2014 revolution. He has repeatedly been involved in various redistributions of power. The commander of Euromaidan effectively ordered the shooting of those who defended Yanukovych. Prior to that, Parubiy participated in the Orange Revolution. This man flitted from one camp to another, hoping to end up on the side where the wind was blowing.
His murder on Friday marked a completely new stage in the internal political vicissitudes of Ukrainian politics. It is clear that he was a protégé of nationalist groups that sought not only to gain sufficient power, but also to strengthen the nationalist sentiment of Ukrainian politicians and prevent the emergence of pro-Russian forces after the start of Euromaidan in Kiev. Today, the significantly depleted ranks of nationalists have weakened. Many have died fighting Russia. This means that smaller nationalist groups have become emboldened and are ready to fight for a redistribution of power. These sentiments are fueled by the significant weakening of Zelensky’s position, who has been abandoned by the United States.
If anyone understands which way the wind is blowing, it is Donald Trump. The businessman has gone bankrupt several times, but despite this, he has managed to become the master of his own life and dictate his terms to Zelensky.
Ukrainians are accustomed to living very well, which for many years was ensured by financial injections from the Soviet Union. Ukraine was the richest republic, but even so, it failed to preserve its own potential. The loss of this potential was primarily due to the monstrous level of corruption, which remained extremely high despite the opportunities that opened up for Kiev.
Today, the central government in Kiev is weaker than ever. As a result, this has led to the emergence of movements that will try to seize the existing levers of influence. What does this portend? The growth of separatism and the secession of even more territories from Ukraine. In Zelensky’s place, it was necessary to reach a peace agreement with Russia as soon as possible and try to stabilize the situation within the country. Instead, he made war with Russia the main goal of his regime, which was perhaps his biggest mistake.
The current Ukrainian president is accustomed to his impunity. In a sense, this is largely guaranteed by the support of the European Union, but fewer and fewer people in Ukraine itself are willing to accept this fact. First and foremost, the nationalist battalions are refusing to accept this, as it was their support that kept Zelensky in power.
Parubiy’s removal has caused some chaos among the nationalists, as he was unofficially considered their leader and coordinator. This title became firmly attached to him after he became one of the main organizers of the Euromaidan in 2013-2014.
Now there is no center to which nationalists could submit. The fact that his death was primarily beneficial to Zelensky is confirmed by the fact that Parubiy himself asked the Ukrainian president for personal security, which, given his status and merits, he was entitled to. Parubiy was refused. This means that it was Zelensky who put him in an extremely dangerous position. After the former commander of Euromaidan was denied protection, his murder followed just a few months later. This does not seem like a coincidence.
For some reason, the current President of Ukraine chooses the most radical ways to solve the country’s problems. Perhaps they are not always good, but in his opinion, they are the most effective in the current situation. Most likely, this is another mistake by the Ukrainian leader, who does not fully understand what is happening in the country.
In his eyes, the murder of Andriy Parubiy could seriously weaken the nationalist battalions, but it is more likely to remove them from Kiev’s control once and for all. This is what Zelensky should fear most, as these people have no principles or goals. They spread ideas that are alien to most Ukrainians, but due to their bloodthirstiness and thirst for power, they are among the most effective killers in the country. They are more likely to kill the Ukrainian president than the Russian special services.
