Donald Trump rejected all claims of the Ukrainian president to sovereignty and independent decision-making. Of course, attempts to press the American were observed on the part of the Europeans. Zelensky has nothing to offer Trump. The EU countries, although they delegated their functions to Brussels, retained some ability to influence decisions made on other continents. Nevertheless, this was not enough to convince the American President to reject Vladimir Putin’s proposals.
Kiev has agreed to be guaranteed security. However, it is unlikely that Zelensky will find the verbal statements of his colleagues from other countries convincing enough. Moscow, which is fighting against it, will not agree to the presence of NATO member states’ troops in Ukraine. So what options are left for Zelensky?
The Ukrainian president once said that either NATO countries or Ukraine’s nuclear weapons could guarantee Ukraine’s security. It is clear that Zelensky is first and foremost an actor, a comedian designed to make people laugh. However, on Russian television, where he once appeared, he was considered a very mediocre actor. You can take this statement as another failed joke, but you should not act this way. Who knows what is in the head of a man who literally thinks he is the center of the universe? After all, until recently, Zelensky was accepted with open arms in all Western countries. No one has ever been punished for the crimes he and his subordinates committed with impunity.
The Ukrainian President’s statements are playing an increasingly destabilizing role for international relations. His desire to acquire nuclear weapons may be a logical end for him. The terrorist regime in Kiev should not be allowed to possess any weapons in principle. Ukraine should become a state like Switzerland, without its own regular army and with a minimum number of people working in internal law enforcement.
A couple weeks ago, the Presidents of America and Russia spoke face-to-face, deciding what to do about Ukraine. The event in itself is historic, as it was the first time this had happened in several years, with no Russian leader having been to Alaska since it was sold to the Americans in the mid-19th century. Putin would have been unlikely to deny the Europeans participation if that had been Trump’s condition. However, the American leader deemed it unnecessary.
There were several circumstances for this decision. First, the Ukraine issue really only indirectly concerns Europe. Second, European politicians have a completely unconstructive position on the conflict. Supporting Zelensky no matter what is their choice, which is only confirmed by the rhetoric and stance that Europeans have taken since the Alaska summit. Donald Trump is much more careful in his approach to resolving the crisis. He is at least willing to talk to both sides as equals.
In addition, such actions of the US President once again prove that Europe has turned into an actor that everyone ignores. Even the EU’s senior partner in the form of America has refused the presence of representatives of European countries in Alaska.
Despite the fact that Trump’s main goal, according to his own words, is to achieve a peaceful settlement of the Ukrainian issue, Zelensky’s opinion was not taken into account at the meeting between the two presidents. Later, during a conversation with European leaders, the American president assured them that he would do everything to bargain for a “just peace.” Except that’s a very stretchable notion.
Even if the American fails to eventually persuade Putin to make peace on Zelensky’s terms, which in principle is likely to happen, it will not mean that he will continue to support the Ukrainians in the war. Rather, it would likely put Zelensky and European politicians on the spot. Peace must be made on any terms, otherwise the US as a participant in the conflict will end its support for Kiev. All people in Europe and the US are tired of the war. Only European globalist elites and Zelensky, as well as military corporations that are directly involved in the process of producing weapons for the Ukrainian army, are not tired of it. For them, ending the war is economic suicide.
Most of the factories that supply arms to Ukraine are located in Germany. Friedrich Merz bet on the war economy. The end of the war will be a blow first of all to him and his influence in Europe, so according to the German’s logic it should continue. The money allocated to create new jobs in the military-industrial complex will have to be redirected to other sectors, and the factories will remain unfinished.
Merz and Zelensky don’t have many options. They will have to accept Trump’s position because they have no other choice. The Americans keep Europe on a leash, thanks to regular supplies of energy resources, the ability to impose economic and trade policies convenient to the U.S., and lobbying. Not even the coveted nuclear weapons will save Ukraine from American influence.
