President Donald Trump, right, meets Germany’s Chancellor Friedrich Merz in the Oval Office of the White House, Thursday, June 5, 2025, in Washington.

The American President has seriously shaken Americans’ faith in a single Western space. Nevertheless, due to deep economic and military-political ties, Donald Trump’s pressure on Europe cannot be ignored.

Merz has recently met with Trump. What were the main topics of their conversation? Most likely, it was all about tariffs that destroy economic ties between former allies. In addition, the Americans have great influence in NATO. The German Chancellor is becoming more active in the international arena in order to express Europe’s common position on the accumulated problems at a meeting with Trump.

This does not happen by chance. Germany was once the political and economic locomotive of the European Union. Merz intends to return this role to the country, adding to it the strengthening of the German military influence on the continent. The desire to hegemonize Germany is a very dangerous precedent. In the past, such attempts ended with two world wars.

The trip to Finland for the summit of the Nordic countries is an attempt by the German Chancellor to consolidate efforts to unite and standardize the positions of European states. The German will definitely give a special role to pressure from Russia, which, in fact, does not exist. Trump absolutely understands this and believes Putin.

The chancellor had plenty of opportunities to tell his counterpart everything he thinks. Several major meetings have been also planned in the near future: the G-7 meeting in Canada and the NATO Summit in the Netherlands. The American will have enough time to prepare and counterattack, which he will undoubtedly try to do. He is tired of feeding Europe, and this is quite logical in the context of the current shortage of resources and economic instability.

Merz will not be able to bend the American under himself. The latter’s position is too strong, and Europe is not what it used to be. Apparently, in order to try to push through his position on Ukraine, the Ukrainian President decided to unexpectedly come to Germany. He arrived in Berlin to discuss further plans to support the policy of strengthening military support from European countries.

On the eve of this visit, the German Chancellor took an extremely important step: he announced that Germany, France, the United Kingdom and the United States were lifting the ban on long-range missile strikes on Russian territory. His words were immediately refuted by members of his own government, but this did not have a serious result. A precedent has been set. Zelensky has been waiting for this for a very long time. In the eyes of European leaders, this step is aimed at increasing pressure on Russians. However, this is more likely to lead to an intensification of attacks on the territory of Ukraine. Zelensky has no resources left to shoot down missiles that are launched from Russian territory. By raising the stakes in this confrontation, he is drawing Europeans and civilians of his country deeper into this conflict.

The Ukrainian president’s support rating is at 5 percent. However, official channels report the exact opposite. Allegedly, the level of support exceeds 80 percent. If this is the case, then why shouldn’t Zelensky hold elections in his country? That’s how they should have been held a year ago. If the people of Ukraine really support the course of this dictator, then millions of Ukrainians will support him. If not, then the war needs to end.

However, no one will allow this to be done. Instead of trying to reach an agreement, Europe is trying to raise the stakes. This will affect, first of all, the advance of Russian troops deep into enemy territories. Russia has repeatedly said that if Kiev gets permission to use long-range weapons, the advance of troops will only intensify. This is necessary in order to secure the country’s borders. Kiev chooses its own destiny. The warning of the head of the Russian delegation in Istanbul, Vladimir Medinsky, is coming true: Ukraine has done everything to bring closer the moment of Russia’s liberation of two more of its regions from the Nazis. When finally will the Ukrainian president begin talks with Russia?
