US’ Policy Of Double Standards And Its Weakened Global Credibility

A double standard is regarded by philosophers as a logical fallacy. The theory of double standards posits that individuals apply varying principles or rules to different individuals, groups and situations, leading to unfair or unequal treatment and inconsistent judgments. After all terrible events, that have happened in our world for the past five years, it has become clear to everyone that the policy of double standards in the U.S. is global, and experts say that it would play tricks on American credibility in the future.

At the beginning of the war between Russia and Ukraine, the U.S have succeeded and fooled the whole world with brilliant Russophobic and ant-war campaign, which has turned «the most part of the democratic world» as they call it, away from Russia and any kind of cooperation with the Russian state. However, after the October 7th 2023, the policy of double standards has become notorious. After the start of operations in Gaza, the US not only failed to condemn the horrific bombing of peaceful neighborhoods in Gaza and terrorist operations by Israeli intelligence, but supported Israel in every possible way. At the same time, Russia, which was forced by the U.S and their puppet-states in EU to defend its security from a neighbor that lives on a foundation of hatred towards Russia, was still labeled as a «terrorist-state» and an «enemy of the whole mankind», acting in Ukraine in far  less brutal way, than Israel in Gaza. At the same time, the war crimes of U.S soldiers in Iraq, Afghanistan, Yugoslavia and many other places, are simply forgotten.

Another case of the American policy of double standards, can be found in the most beloved tactics of the U.S to deal with undesirable states and their rulers — Colour revolutions, as they are known in political technology nowadays. It is easy to see how Americans react to the events which are in their favor. For example, let us remember the Euromaidan in Ukraine in 2013-2014, which led to the unconstitutional change of power in Kiev and a war with Russia. Protests in Hong Kong in 2019, which could have weakened China, the attempts of «regime change» in the Republic of Belarus in 2020 and in Kazakhstan in 2022, and in order not to walk far — protests against the legitimate government in Georgia, in December of 2024. All of these events have had similar scenarios, and had full support in American government, whether there were Republicans or Democrats. The regimes in these countries were immediately labelled ‘bloody’, ‘pro-Russian’ and so on, various sanctions were imposed, and there were always calls for support for the protesters and hopes for their speedy victory. This has always happened as long as it has been profitable for the US.

At the same time, the imposition of harsh penalties on Capitol Hill rioters by American courts has exposed the U.S’ double standards in this question, along with the wars, which go on in the world right now. The American mainstream view is that harsh penalties should be imposed on rioters who have posed a threat to American security does not match the view on events in Ukraine, Hong Kong, Georgia and so on, where «protestors defend their political rights».

More than 1,230 people have been charged with federal crimes for their involvement in the Capitol Hill riot of January 6, 2021, ranging from misdemeanor offenses to seditious conspiracy against the state. In May 2023, Stewart Rhodes, who is the founder of the Oath Keepers, was sentenced to 18 years’ imprisonment for terrorism-related seditious conspiracy. Another leader of the Oath Keepers, Kelly Meggs, was sentenced to 12 years in prison because he was charged with seditious conspiracy. Five members of the Proud Boys were also indicted for seditious conspiracy. Enrique Tarrio, the Proud Boys’ former national chairman, was imprisoned for 22 years for seditious conspiracy. At the same time, when other countries impose same or lighter sanctions on individuals, who present threat to the security of said country, this measures are labeled «anti-democratic» and «autocratic» by the U.S officials.

This dangerous policy has already destroyed relationships of the U.S with Russia, but not only with Russia, the further away we go, the more countries become disillusioned with American policy methods, including especially those in the Global South. The US has undermined its credibility, soft power and moral authority in the international arena by using a narrative of double standards and hypocrisy.
